Automódulos to set up a company at Opel´s facilities in Zaragoza
The novelty of the project is that it forms part of a more complex production process, owned by Opel, which is the manufacture of the complete vehicle. The main difficulty is in the need to set up a company that fits in perfectly with Opel´s assembly process.
The success of the project lies in managing people properly and the multinational has taken this account when awarding the project to Fagor Ederlan.
The decision responds to a strategy shared by the two companies. On the one hand, there is Opel´s interest in outsourcing some of its production processes for them to be managed by qualified suppliers. On the other hand, one of Fagor Ederlan´s key objectives is to provide customers with more value and situate itself in the automotive market as a supplier of modules, units and functions, thereby promoting its business position when it comes to forming part of a select club of suppliers that are going to have a direct relationship with the car manufacturers: the so-called tier one suppliers.
Fagor Ederlan´s participation is not the result of chance, but the materialisation of one of its core strategies over the last few years: the supply of modules, units and functions. With that aim, in 1999 Fagor Ederlan Borja S.A. was set up to assemble the suspension columns for all the Opel Corsas in Europe and, in 2002, the Automodulos holding was purchased from the IBV Corporation, in collaboration with MCC Inversiones and Batz.
The three plants of Automodulos S.A. - Fagor Ederlan Borja, Automódulos Aragón also located in Borja and the new activity set up at Opel in Zaragoza will all be managed by one team. The total turnover of these plants exceeded 70 million euros in 2002. The forecasts for this year are for 106 million euros, as a result of the delivery to Opel of two modules for the Corsa and Meriva models: the suspension column and the front axle on the one hand and the rear axle on the other.
In addition to providing human resources management and its logistics capacity Fagor Ederlan also supplies a number of safety components like: the knuckle, a key safety part in the live axle, the suspension arms as well as brake discs and drums.
